Wells City head for Somerset Premier Cup final

A Remarkable season for Wells City got even better on Tuesday night as they booked their place in the final of the Somerset Premier Cup after coming from behind to beat Weston-super-Mare.

The home side had the upper hand in the early stages but Wells' defence coped well, with Will Justin pulling off a top save from Jason Pope's powerfully-struck 30-yard effort.

City then came close to taking the lead on 35 minutes when a superb Leon Britton shot from a tight angle seemed destined for the net, but somehow Ollie Barnes acrobatically cleared off his own goal-line.

The home side did take the lead on 40 minutes after a long crossfield ball from Matt Trybull caught Ollie Bryant out of position, allowing Ntenis Gkotzai to send over a cross to Ioannis Varouxakis, who slammed the ball home.

Wells deservedly got themselves back on terms on 55 minutes when Britton fought tooth and nail to retrieve the ball inside the Weston penalty area, before Jake Brown latched onto the loose ball to fire into the net.

City keeper Justin was called on to make two fine saves to deny Weston substitute Tristan Plummer, but it was the visitors who deservedly took the lead on 83 minutes with a fine near-post header from James Bachelor.

Weston tried in vain to take the game into extra time as Jamie Edge was denied by Justin and the impressive Nathan Rendall did well to clear another effort off the line, but City's players and supporters were ecstatic when the referee blew the final whistle.

Mark Read's side were the better team and each and every player deserves credit for taking City to a cup final, where they will face Southern League side Larkhall Athletic.
