| Thursday 5th November 2009Cheddar U18 3 - 4 Wells City U18Despite falling behind after only 2 minutes Wells were determined to take 3 points from this derby encounter. A bullet of a header from Jackson got them straight back into the game and a combination of Crowther’s penetrating left wing runs and intuitive link up play between strikers Blanchard and Baby added two more to Wells’ tally at the break with Baby on target twice for the second match in succession. The second half was a scrappier affair- physical and energetic as action swept from end to end. Cheddar hit the post early then Wells were denied on the break twice by the fast-approaching keeper. Gouldney found Blanchard who was stopped only by a goal-saving tackle but the Cheddar defence were sufficiently rattled to concede a penalty. The kick was struck with business-like efficiency and at 4 – 1ahead Wells should have been able to see the game out. To their credit, Cheddar would not let them. Cheddar scored twice more. Their goal on the final whistle meant the scoreline read 4-3 which makes the game look far closer than it actually was and must serve to keep City U18s on their toes. Tuesday 13th October 2009Winscombe U18s 3 - 4 Wells City U18sFrom the moment a speculative long shot gave Winscombe an early lead, they looked dangerous with every attack. Jones, however, remained dominant and with Black in defence, repelling all that came their way on the ground or in the air. Even so, a searching corner and a goalmouth scramble enabled Winscombe to penetrate again so that Wells were 2-0 down at half-time and appeared to have a mountain to climb.Substitute Hayes injected determination after the break when it was City's turn to shine. A Gripper cross found debutant Baby, whose strike put Wells back in the game. A looped shot over Goden's head, which left City trailing 3-1, should have killed them off, but they continued to build pressure. Four times their efforts were cleared off the line until Padfield took charge. His intuitive passing found Jackson whose through ball split the defence. Garner squared to Hall who finished emphatically. Almost immediately Garner headed home and at 3-3, with just a few minutes left, City would not be satisfied with a single point. Their tireless running was justly rewarded when Baby smashed in the winner with the last kick of the game. From 3-1 down and with only nine minutes remaining, it was courage and adrenaline that won this one for Wells. Wednesday 9th October 2009Taunton Staplegrove U18 2 - 2 Wells City U18The strength and pace with which Staplegrove forced this edge-of-the seat game to be played quickly put Wells 1-0 behind; then, within minutes of the first, they scored again and the travelling supporters feared the worst. They had not reckoned with the indomitable spirit that manager Tony Crook is building. When keeper Brown’s decisive footwork cleared up another attacking onslaught, Blanchard stretched to meet a cross and was denied only by the woodwork. Minutes later Jackson’s speculative left foot met a Garner flick and the keeper tipped over the bar. Jones and Black at the back competed for every ball and provided pass after pass to sustain pressure. It proved irresistible and Blanchard’s cool head and fast feet made it 2-1 at half-time. Substitutes Gouldney and Hayes helped Wells start brightly after the break. When the lively Hall was faced with a fast-approaching keeper, a lob was the only option and, deservedly, Wells were back on level terms. League leaders Staplegrove were rattled now. Crowther refused to stop running, Garner and Hall each headed close. Wells pressed for the winner. It almost came when Jackson’s through ball was powered home by Gripper but was adjudged off-side.From 2-0 down to deserving victory there was much to celebrate for The Blues this week. Wednesday 29th September 2009Wells City U18s 0 - 1 Ashton U18sAfter only five minutes, City found themselves behind in a pacy cup tie that demanded much of them physically. The opposition were a powerful unit so when the stretched defence failed to clear a probing cross, the Blues knew they were in for a challenging night. They responded with purpose and power, matching Ashton's fluency with accuracy and strength of their own.Their start to the second half was especially lively when, with growing confidence and command, Jones repeatedly played out from the back to allow Turner and Hall to push into attack. Black challenged for and won a number of the contests in the air. Blanchard centred across the face of goal and Crowther was inches short of connecting as City built up wave upon wave of pressure. Ashton emphasised their solidity, however, responding with one particularly fast break that required Padfield to clear off the line.In the closing minutes City threw everyone into Ashton's half but twice the Blues' free-kicks were coolly collected by a now dominant goalkeeper. On the night they were not outclassed and deserved at least the equaliser. Man of the match: Benji Jones. Wednesday 16th September 2009Sherborne U18 1 - 0 Wells City U18 0Wells’ first away fixture in the Somerset Floodlight League saw a highly competitive encounter with an older and physically stronger Sherborne side who settled more quickly and applied pressure through a succession of corners and free kicks. Resolute defence from Black, Jackson, Jones and Stone negotiated this early onslaught allowing the midfield of Apfelstedt, Crowther, Gouldney, Hall and Turner to exert more influence. Neither team dominated and the game continued at a ferocious pace with chances at both ends. Striker Branch worked tirelessly and came close to breaking the deadlock. Keeper Godin put in a confident display and kept Wells in the game. Wells grew stronger as the game progressed and, following the introduction of Grant, Hayes and Joyner, came close to taking the lead. In the 85th minute - against the run of play - a defensive lapse allowed Sherborne to snatch the winning goal. Whilst defeat was disappointing, the team should take heart from the fact that the 14 strong squad for this game included 9 players from the current Wells U16 team. With a core of senior team mates the younger players are acquitting themselves well at this higher level and the future certainly looks bright for football in Wells. Tuesday 9th September 2009Wells City U18’s 4 - 3 Frome Town U18’sCity began their first real test of the season with characteristic determination and there was enough in this game to show that those new to the side will benefit greatly from the challenge.Brown’s first team outings, however, have instilled strength and confidence. He out-paced two defenders putting Wells ahead after 20 minutesA messy equaliser from a corner left Blue defenders frustrated until Zac Hall took control in midfield. He emerged in possession from a crunching tackle, to thread an inch- perfect pass to Brown. His cool finish restored Wells’ lead. Gouldney then delivered one of several dazzling crosses from the right which Frome’s replacement goal-keeper spilled to Branch who shot just wide, leaving City 2-1 up at half-time.Frome equalised just after the break until impact substitute Padfield, replacing the solid Turner, added energy and accuracy. He took possession in the centre and found Hall with a long through ball. From 20 yards Hall made no mistake.Frome replied immediately. A cross went unchallenged, Wells conceded again so with minutes to go a 3-3 draw looked imminent. But a late Blue’s surge forward won a free kick just outside the box which was too powerful for the keeper to hold, and Brown was in the right place to slot home to get his hat-trick and secure victory - deserved in the end but not City’s best performance. Tuesday 1st September 2009Wells City U18’s 3 - 1 Radstock Town U18’sBoth teams started at a very quick pace which was very testing for both defences on a greasy surface, with neither side creating a clear opening in the first fifteen minutes. With two changes to the starting line up that beat WSM a week ago, Jake Brown and Reuben van de Peer in for Rob Turner and Zak Hall (both with the A team) it was these two, that combined to break the deadlock, a lofted curling free kick by Brown beat the keeper but dropped down off the bar where van de Peer was in the right place to tap it home from a yard. This settled Wells and five minutes later a trademark Brown down the left and into the box beating two defenders and slotting home from six yards. With Wells now on top and controlling the play with some good approach play it wasn't long before Wells got a third and what a sweet strike, Mike Gouldney picked up the ball thirty yards out beat his marker and rifled in from twenty five yards into the bottom left corner, three nil up at half time and looking quite comfy. But the second half was a very different game as Radstock came out and took the game to Wells forcing Wells to rush their play and forcing many errors which knocked Wells out of their rhythm. The ball was back and forward between defences with no clear chances for either side until two minutes from the end when Radstock broke down the right and a low ball into the box was tucked away. Monday 24th August 2009Wells City U18’s 1 - 0 Weston Super Mare U18’sA solitary goal from debutant Joe Jackson was just enough to give a young Wells side victory in there first pre season game. With holidays robbing Wells of the more senior players in its ranks the managment duo of Tony Crook and Steve Appflestedt fielded a young side against a very well organised Weston side. With Weston now entering the Conference U19 league their 2nd X1 will be playing in the Somerset Floodlight League premier divison and with Weston first team manger and ex Bristol Rovers player Mark McEaver watching the Weston lads were keen to impress,. It was Wells that started the game better with some nice fluid passing from the young team, this was rewarded when a looping Joe Jackson header found the back of the net on 15 minutes. Wells continued to create chances and limit Weston to a few long range shots and could count themselves a little unlucky not to be 2 or three goals up when the half time whistle blew with Branch causing most of the problems for the Weston defence. With Weston U18 1st X1 playing the night before Weston brought on what was probably the previous nights substitutes for the second half, Weston started to dominate the midfield with the 3 substitutes standing out as Wells struggled to contain the numerous attacks, however the Wells back four contained the Weston attack for long periods of the second half and a couple of fine saves from the home keeper Wells continued to hang on to their slender one goal lead, Wells created a few chances for themselves but could not find the final touch as they struggled to find their first half fluency. As the game entered its final stages the Wells goal indeed led a charmed life as Weston again started to dominate but again the Wells back line held firm for a fine victory against a side that will be playing at a higher level than Wells this season. |
