Sunday 11th April 2010Wedmore Over 35’s 3 - 5 Wells Over 35’sWells travelled to Wedmore on a bright Sunday morning , sporting a few different ugly faces from the team that drew 2 - 2 at the rec previously. The wizzard from oz Phil Watson conjured up a few tricks wearing his bobble instead of his magicians hat and enjoyed the quality football and great spirit in which the game was played. Dashy played up front with the left footed Pete Vowles (who scored a well placed pen on his debut after being released by the reserve team) and deservedly notched his hat- trick mesmerising their defence all day with his skills. The goal of the game came from the first team manager Tim Moxey who unleashed a 30 yard screamer into the roof of the net.(2nd best goal of the season behind billy). Ian Currell and Barry Maynard enjoyed the challenges in defence which totalled 158 in age between the 3 of them. Heath Falck and Tim Westmacott produced some good passing in midfield along with player manager Mark Cornish and the slim looking tanned Mark Murrell. Thanks also to Andy Piper for making up the numbers playing with a broken toe although most of his passes went to the opposition. ( nice shampoo, woof woof ). Rob Davis played well in goal who couldn't do anything about the 3 goals that Wedmore scored and cheers to Reece Cornish for being ball boy for the second day in a row. Many thanks to Wedmore for an enjoyable game and to the 68 year old ref who handled the banter well, then back to the new inn after for a beer or two and a great spread of food provided by the pub.
OVER 35’s LOSE UNBEATEN RUNWells Over 35’s 3 - 4 Portway Over 35’sWells held another of their over 35’s football matches against a Portway select team , who hadn’t played together for more than 20 years. This was a good humoured game with many well known faces turning out for the game although some may have been a little less fit than the last time they played. There were some moments of sheer skill and expertise on the pitch and times of the mind being willing but the body not quite able to chase the long balls. But credit to those who did turn out, and entertained the crowd. The game finished 4 - 3. Many thanks to the ever youthful Ernie Truckle who refereed the game
VETERANS RAISE FUNDS FOR BEN The veterans of Wells City and Belrose (over 35s) featured in a good-humoured game at the Athletic Ground. After a fairly evenly contested first half, Wells ran riot after the break. The game brought together two sides who were raising money for Ben Greenhalgh, who broke his leg recently while playing for Wells City A. The game was highlighted by cameo appearances from Greenhalgh's father, Neil, and brother, Jake. The first half saw Belrose take an early lead through Mike Carey, but Wells equalised on the half-hour through Baden Wilkinson. Belrose regained the advantage at the start of the second half with a Geoff Coward strike. Wells immediately struck back to level the scores with a Mark Cornish drive, with his weaker left foot, from five yards out. The floodgates opened for Wells in the final 20 minutes of the game as further goals from Mike Careslade (2), Julian Coppell, Tim Rice and Baden Wilkinson (2) gave them an 8-2 lead. Appropriately, it was Jake Greenhalgh who scored in the final moments for Belrose, but he was to finish on the losing side as Wells City were 8-3 victors in a game which raised £170. Wells City A players have expressed their thanks to the retiring management team of Julian Coppell and Mark Phipps. The duo have stepped down after leading the side to their most successful season since joining the Mid Somerset League - fourth place in Division Two and the winners of the Morland Challenge Cup. OVER 35’S STILL UNBEATEN!Wells City over 35’s 4 - 3 Cheddar over 35’sWells over 35’s managed by Mark Cornish and with Pete Deverall as the chairman of the over 35's (some well over 35!!) took on Cheddar in the first of a series of regular over 35 master class games!!Despite the ages of some of the players the game was played in good spirit although the players were the first to admit that they were not quite so fast/fit as they used to be, The wells team consisted of some famous experienced (not allowed to say old) ie Steve Parfitt, Lance Truckle, Duncan keen, Dave Loxton, Brian Applegate, Baden Wilkinson, Mark Wilkinson, and Kev Puddy in goal. The teams were equally matched in performance although it was obvious which players still made it onto the park on Saturdays rather than those who had taken up the less energetic game of golf! The important thing was that the Wells over 35's continue to remain unbeaten! The team physio David Green was kept busy with providing ice packs, cold sprays and copious amounts of water for the injured ankles/ Knees etc of these veteran players. This season there will be a number of Over 35's games- all are invited to watch these seasoned player show off their skills. BOXING DAY OVER 35’s CHARITY MATCHWells over 35’s 5 - 1 Belrose over 35’s.Boxing day saw the annual over 35’s charity game played on the Rowdens road pitch. Both teams fielded some Wells known players, such as Julian Coppell for Wells and his brothers Ernie John Coppell and Martin Coppell in goal for Belrose, Neil Greenhalgh, and Mike Carey to name a few.Wells team consisted of Darren Padfield returning to the football pitch after a few years resting and watching the games from the club barDuncan Keene, Lance Truckle, John Russell, Mike Burr, Mark Wilkinson to name but a few stalwarts. The game was played in good spirits with both teams giving their all even if they weren't as fast as they used to be (or thought they were!)Over all Wells came out as the stronger team with goals from Duncan Keene x2 Steve Pledger Heath Falck, and Julian Coppell who took great delight in beating his brother Ernie John and then slid a great goal past his other brother Martin in the Belrose Goal!Great efforts from Darren Padfield, cheered throughout by his family and relatives in the Wells goal who was unlucky to let one past him- he so wanted to have a clean Sheet, Man of match went to Darren Padfield for his stirling efforts. Wells over 35’s VS Saturday soccer school dads.Wells held another of their over 35’s football master classes with Phil Watson captaining the Wells City over 35 all stars and Mark Cornish captaining the Saturday soccer school dads. This was a good humoured game with many well known faces turning out for the game although s ome may have been a little less fit than the last time they played, Paul Randall. Simon Dovey Kev Puddy Mark Western, Mike Burr, Pete Deverall, all playing for the Wells over 35 team. Even Martin Lovell managed to find some boots to wear. Played against Steve Collins, John Morris, Steve Parfitt and co. there were some moments of sheer skill, knowledge and expertise on the pitch and times of the mind being willing but the body not quite able to chase the long balls. But credit to those who did turn out, and entertained the crowd (mostly the families of the players there not really knowing what to expect)The game finished 2-1 to the soccer school dads. Many thanks to the ever youthful Ernie Truckle who refereed the game |
