Sherborne Town 0 – 1 Wells City
When City last visited North Dorset in April, they were crowned Toolstation Western League Division One Champions. On Saturday they returned across the county border to record an impressive opening day success in their first game in the Premier Division.
Sherborne started at a great pace, with their players being a tad quicker and stronger that the City lads had grown accustom to. The home side should have got their noses in front twice in the opening 20 minutes, but glaring mistakes from Danny Thompson and Aden Wills kept the scoreline blank as both shot wide from within the 6 yard box. It took until the 26th minute for Wells to get their first sight of goal as striker Steve Murray, deputising for the absent Adam Jones, characteristically wriggled through a crowded penalty area, and was only denied by the outstretched arm of Emmerson in the Sherborne goal. Chris Sheard was next to focus on the home net, but his 25 yard drive on 35 minutes went inches wide. With half time approaching, Wells keeper Tom Punchard did exceptionally well to keep the scorecard blank with a fine stop from close range. The second period saw the City side grown in confidence with skipper Kyle McErlain putting in a ‘man of the match’ performance, driving his colleagues forward and winning everything in the air. A mistake in the Sherborne backline saw Murray intercept a cross field pass on 65 minutes, but with a free run at goal, the striker decided to shoot early with the keeper off his line, but the effort went high and wide. With 20 minutes remaining, Wells introduced influential midfielder Ross McErlain for Steve Sokol, and his first touch was to send a 30 yard free kick high and wide. The all important breakthrough arrived on 70 minutes when the excellent Nathan Truckle sent a gorgeous pass through to Murray, who turned his marker inside the box, only to be knocked to the ground and the referee pointed to the spot. Murray dusted himself off to send the keeper the wrong way and plant the ball firmly in the back of the net.
Wells were now bossing the game with the backline line of Ben Higgins, McErlain, Jamie Gowers, and Mark Randall soaking up any pressure exerted by the home side, whilst Ollie Edwards and Jake Brown worked tirelessly down the flanks. Sam Ford was introduced for Brown on 80 minutes as the Cathedral side ran the clock down for a deserved victory. Tempers began to flare in the dying moments when the tigerish Truckle exchanged pleasantries with his opposite number, but the referee extended a cool head to calm matters down.
Wells duly collected their first maximum points of the year, and a delighted Manager, Tim Moxey said afterwards, “I’m absolutely thrilled with the win. We had to work hard in the opening exchanges, but credit to the lads who all performed extremely well, and it’s a fantastic way to start the campaign”
